As structural steel fabricators, we are aware of the steel industry’s contribution to global greenhouse gas emissions, primarily due to the carbon-intensive production and raw material mining processes. With the increasing urgency to combat climate change and reduce carbon emissions, it is crucial for industries, including the steel sector, to transition to more sustainable practices.

Recently, ArcelorMittal, a leading steel and mining company, has taken pioneering steps toward carbon-neutral steel with the introduction of a XCarb™ product line and initiative plan. With their carbon-neutral steel products now being used in UK supply chains it is only a matter of time before more steel suppliers take steps towards carbon neutrality.

The team at Steelo have been looking at ArcelorMittal’s XCarb™ and wants to share some of the details, components, and potential it has to revolutionize the steel industry.

What is XCarb™?

ArcelorMittal’s XCarb™ is a holistic initiative that combines innovative technologies, products, and services under one umbrella to reduce the carbon footprint of the steelmaking process. The company aims to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2050, in line with the Paris Agreement’s objectives. XCarb™ focuses on three main components: green steel, recycling and circular economy, and investment in breakthrough technologies.

XCarb™ Green Steel Certificates

ArcelorMittal’s XCarb™ green steel certificates allows customers to purchase steel with a certification to support they are buying products with a reduced carbon footprint. The certificates guarantee that the steel is produced using a combination of clean energy sources and innovative technologies, resulting in significantly lower CO2 emissions than traditional steelmaking processes. This will help businesses like Steelo and others to meet sustainability targets and support global efforts to reduce carbon emissions. It is fair to assume that accreditations like a Green Steel Certificate will become as recognisable as The Green Apple Environment awards or B Certified Corporation badges.

XCarb™ Recycled and Renewed

The XCarb™ Recycled and Renewed program is centred around the concept of a circular economy, wherein materials are kept in use for as long as possible to minimize waste and environmental impact. Through this program, ArcelorMittal recycles and reuses by-products and waste materials generated during the steelmaking process. This approach not only reduces the carbon footprint of steel production but also contributes to resource efficiency and the conservation of raw materials. At Steelo, in line with our lean processes, we have reduced waste material but for all raw materials that are surplus to requirement, we recycle with local recycling plants Gibbs and Ron Smith Recycling.

XCarb™ Innovation Fund

In anticipation of other suppliers following suit, I find ArcelorMittal’s establishment of the XCarb™ Innovation Fund particularly noteworthy. This $300 million annual fund is dedicated to investing in ground-breaking technologies and research projects that have the potential to revolutionize the steel industry. This includes projects related to carbon capture, utilization, storage, hydrogen-based steelmaking, and other innovative processes that could significantly reduce the industry’s carbon emissions.

Conclusion

ArcelorMittal’s XCarb™ initiative represents a pioneering move toward a more sustainable future for the steel industry, setting an example that other suppliers should strive to emulate. This comprehensive program takes a multifaceted approach to sustainability, encompassing green steel production, the promotion of recycling and circular economy principles, and a commitment to investing in breakthrough technologies. By addressing these key areas, ArcelorMittal is laying the groundwork for a significant reduction in its carbon footprint, demonstrating the potential for steel production to become more environmentally friendly.

With up to 40 tonnes of steel on our production line a day, we find the development of sustainable alternatives, such as those provided by ArcelorMittal’s XCarb™ initiative, both encouraging and exciting. The shift toward more sustainable steel production practices has the potential to revolutionize the industry, fostering a greener future where the environmental impact of steel manufacturing is significantly reduced. Witnessing this transformation in the industry not only creates anticipation for further innovation and progress but also instils hope that other suppliers will recognize the importance of adopting similar approaches to sustainability.

The success of ArcelorMittal’s XCarb™ initiative hinges on the willingness of other steel suppliers to follow in the company’s footsteps and commit to greener steel production practices. By embracing strategies similar to those proposed by ArcelorMittal, including the focus on green steel, recycling, and the circular economy, other suppliers can contribute to the global effort to mitigate climate change and reduce the steel industry’s carbon emissions. This collective action will pave the way for a more sustainable future in steel production, benefiting not only the industry itself but also the environment and society.
